Week in Hair | Goodbye January... hello February!

I'm filming my weave vid tomorrow! Whoop whoop! I was supposed to get my hair layered last week before filming but my schedule has been ridiculous! Where have all the hours in the day gone? Either way I've grown to love the hair regardless.

In other news I went swimming on Saturday... I wore a supermarket carrier bag, 2 headscarves and my swimming cap and guess what...

My hair was still D-R-E-N-C-H-E-D!

I'm just glad my wash day was simple and quick- I didn't feel any manipulation at all.

Weave wash day Regime
- I separated my leave out hair and weave and commenced to pre-poo
using Philip Kingsley Elasticizer Extreme because my Gingernut Brulee pre-poo had finished.

- I then rinsed out the pre-poo and went on to co-wash and
deep condition using two new products I was sent to review
1] Goldwell Kerasilk Ultra Rich Care Treatment
2] Kerastase Nutritive Nutri-Thermique Masque

I was also sent some samples from both brands such as the
Kerastase Paris Resistance Fibre Architecte which has one seriously enticing
product description... Can't wait to try it!

[I didn't do my usual DC with heat because I simply couldn't wait to finish, put my feet up, watch a movie and relax!!!]

- I followed up with a Leave-in which doubles up as a heat protectant,
and added a few squirts of Pantene Serum before commencing with blow-drying and straightening my hair.

Had to cop me this Aztec skirt after seeing it on the Gina [NaturalBelle]! Cheers love ^_^
How were your weekends? I'd love to hear :D

Hair | How to be a better Product Junkie... QUICK TIPS!

The word junkie is usually negatively used but hello it's 2012 baby and 'junkie' is the new way of saying 'crazy about'... ever heard of Jesus Junkie? Well it follows the same suit!

I can confess I am a hair product junkie, and slowly becoming a shoe, clothes and jewellery junkie! Eeek!!!

However, fortunately my years of studying Econ and a serious African upbringing, have taught me how to save the odd dollar, so thank God I've found me a balance. Here are some quick tips on how to keep your inner PJ satisfied but not broke!

# Swipe swipe keep the change lol

1-TRY BEFORE YOU BUY
I don't care what anyone says, I am never too shy to ask for samples. In fact I would never have discovered my love for Dermalogica products if I didn't get me some samples first!  Back to topic, hair samples do exist! You can even buy tiny trial sizes from online hair retailers like 'Anita Grant' and 'British Curlies' to name a few. I have a stash of samples under my bed that I've tried and will never try again! Imagine if I had bought them!!!

2-COMPARE THE MEERKAT [MARKET]
Learn to compare your favourite hair products. I'm not saying you shouldn't try something new, but if you're looking for something worth investing in and know you have product junkie traits, why not look at some of the key ingredients in some of your favourite hair products and look for the same ingredients in the new product you're after. That way you might just have similar results!

3-READ THOSE REVIEWS
Reviews are your no.1 stop for product truth. Before you dash the dollar and splurge, it's worth seeing what the hairsphere thinks... in fact why not find a review on Youtube or check out the product site, there are usually tons of reviews.

So there you go... some quick tips for those quick product junkie fingers! Let me know if i've saved you the odd quid *wink wink*!!!

The 25th Hour

I had an awesome weekend back in London to celebrate a beautiful friends 25th b'day! Of course my weave came with me and it was a fab night! I love spending time with fabulous people [especially these fab ladies below!!!] Shame i didn't get any with the birthday girl... hmm- blame the guy with the camera!!!

In other news, i'll officially be getting some layers put in. I think it's all just a little bit too rigid and long for my liking! Here are my final pics before I get them done! My side fringe was very disobedient... Tut tut tut!

Hope you've all kicked started the week with a blast!

Haircare ain't easy | Hair Blogger Bloopers!

One of my favourite things about blogging has got to be the reader emails I get! Some from new found hair lovers, others
from long lost friends and the odd email from aunties who use to tease my hair obsession!!!

I've realised how easy a hair journey may look and seem coming from a hair blogger but y'all, trust me it ain't! I have finally come to a point where I can say my regime and staple products are here to stay... but really and truly even haircare can switch on you every now and again!

Point is I've made many mistakes and its taken me a whole 2 years to get here so be encouraged already ^_^

Here are some of my...

#1 Henna Wars

This one was not cute! I had just taken my hair out of the final LYT Protective Style Challenge weave install and after having read so many blog/forum posts on the wonders of Henna, I couldn't help but try it out too! Thing is, a super quick detangle after taking out your weave cornrows followed by Henna... NEVER goes down well! I even took a picture of my tennis ball sized clump of hair which came out
as a result of it!

#2 D.I.Y Disaster

Haha I kept this one under wraps! The embarrasment would have stolen my dignity at the time! Let's just say I hadn't even qualified as a mix your conditioner with oil kinda mixtress, but something inside me told me I could rule the world with my medley of Banana, Yoghurt Water and Oil... Results were shambolic!! [Dare I use the word!]
I had washed and blowdried without looking in the mirror only to find white yoghurt bits all over my hair when blowdrying... I had to wash again! Major manipulation!!!

#3 Oils... A Girls best friend?

Using just Tea Tree oil directly on my scalp! Damnnnn it was painful. Folks please remember Essential oils must be added to Carrier oils and should NEVER be used alone! Carriers e.g. Olive oil, Sweet Almond oil, Jojoba oil etc

#4 Darn UK Weather

Leaving home without a brolly and newly flat ironed hair is like eating gravel with sprinkles of dust on top [does NOT make sense]. On this fine day let's just say the rain had an agenda for me! Of course the ex hair lover I was went right back home and flat ironed my hair again! Difference is this time my hair was damp! #Sizzle sizzle

#5 ... The Verdict

So here's the verdict. You will make mistakes during your healthy hair journey. Hopefully none as silly as mine. But eventually you'll get there! It does get easier! Drop me an e-mail, I'm always here to offer some words of advice/ encouragement! Till then healthy, happy, h-amazing hair journey ;)

P.s Jeni, Tola, Ebony, Pelumi, Gina, Shika, Michelle and Ally you're TAGGED!!!

New Hair Do | 18 inch Weave !!! Yikes

Did I mention that I would be resorting to a weave as a protective style for the next 6-8 weeks? Well now you know! I have NEVER used 18' in my hair so the length still makes me feel weird! The longest i've had is 16' and that was with curly hair!

I've convinced the sis [Love Lamide] to give the hair a big trim seeing as she refuses to cut it!
I'll be doing a bi-weekly update on youtube and uploading a review of the hair aswell as a maintenance 101 video... so stay tuned ^_^ !!!

What do you think ... keep the length or trim trim trim?

P.s any guesses on what kind of hair it it?

Saturday's Hair | 20 minute Deep Conditioned Burgers!

So here's a quick recipe for when you're beyond peckish and on a hair deep conditioning break. These bad boys take approx 5 minutes to prepare and another 15 minutes to cook... hungry anyone?

Ingredients
[inspired by Jamie Oliver's Botham Burger]

2lbs minced beef
2 medium onion
1 tomato
1 egg

Seasoning : salt, black and red pepper, maggi cubes, crushed garlic

Method
  • Preheat the oven to medium high.
  • "Mix and scrunch all the ingredients together. Divide into 4, then gently mold and pack each burger into smallish slightly flattened balls."
  • Brush grill grates clean, then brush lightly with oil. Place burgers on grill and cook rotating after 3 minutes, roughly 6 minutes per a side, until burgers are cooked through but still juicy. Toast hamburger buns placing cut side down on grill.
  • Serve immediately with your favorite fixings! [mine were homemade chips!]

My Hair Regimen and Staples

My Hair Regimen and Staples | Jan 2012

With every new year comes plenty of change and new goals... well my regime hasn't changed much but my staples sure have!
I was way to laxed last year and forgot to update y'all! So here's my updated Regime.

Wash once every week or once every two weeks
 [alternating between Shampoo and Conditioner]
Moisturise and seal every day/night
Trim ends every 3- 4 months or when necessary

The Wash...
Prepoo* | I prepoo every wash day which softens and prepares my hair for washing, whilst also protecting
it from being stripped of its natural goodness.

Wash/Clarify | I wash / co-wash my hair once every 1 or 2 weeks.
I alternate between shampoo washing and co-washing , and only clarify when I feel I have
a lot of product build up, usually once every two months.

ConditionI DC with heat for 20-30 minutes. This can be under a few carrier bags! Or under my trusty hooded
dryer and shower cap! I use a moisturising DC most wash days and a protein DC when my hair feels weak
and/or when I will be using a reasonable amount of direct heat.

Treatments | The two products I use on my weekly/fortnightly wash are Porosity Control for reducing porous hair
and Aphogee 2 minute Reconstructor for a quick protein boost.

Upkeep and styling...
Leave-in | After washing I follow up with a Leave -in and then proceed to styling my hair.
I dry by blowdrying, airdrying [scarf method]
 or rollersetting my hair.

Moisturiser/ Sealant | I moisturise and seal every day/night. I also baggy my hair once a week.

Heat | Before applying heat to my hair I always use a Heat Protectant

Scalp Stimulation | I massage my scalp every night and every 2-3 days I massage it using a  stimulating scalp oil.
