lyt 12 days of Christmas Haircare charity special : day 10

Christmas and Boxing day over and now back to the final 3 days of Christmas giving! Today's Charity of the day is another one which definitely has a place in my heart, so let me introduce...

the Afro Caribbean Leukemia Trust

As human being we often find ourselves more and more involved in charity giving and supporting when its affected our personal lives. Well it definitely is true! How about taking a step without having to experience a loss, you will definitely make a difference!

What is Bone Marrow?
Bone marrow is a spongy tissue found within bones. All blood cells are produced within the marrow
To sustain the necessary levels of blood cells the bone marrow of an adult must produce about 3,000,000 red blood cells and 120,000 white blood cells every second. All these cells originate from a small population of stem cells. Less than one in 5,000 of the marrow cells is a stem cell
Many sufferers and their families contact the ACLT from the UK and aroun
d the world asking for  assistance to raise awareness and recruit potential donors in an attempt to find suitable donors

Unfortunately, 24,000 sufferers require life saving bone marrow transplants at any one time

How to make a difference?

- If Eddie Kadi can do it, so can you!!! -

Blood Donation
Giving blood is quick, easy and most importantly, it saves lives. To donate blood you must be at least 17 years of age and weigh at least 7st 12lbs (50kg). You can donate blood once every 16 weeks (3 times a year) and each time you donate this equates to 475 mls of blood
Every minute of every day someone somewhere needs blood for life saving treatment. Shockingly, just 0.4% of current blood donors are Black. Yet we rely on blood for many things e.g. treatment of cancers, transfusions for Sickle Cell disorder patients, child birth, major surgery and life threatening conditions. Giving Blood is one way of giving a little to do a lot
Fundraise

A big thank you to Gidore who decided to make a difference by donating a box of Philip Kingsley goodies to the ACLT!

What is Alopecia?

Alopecia is a general term used for hair loss; this can be a small bald patch on the head or the loss of all the hair over the entire body.

Types of Alopecia?

Alopecia Areata (AA)

Used to describe hair loss occurring in patches anywhere on the body.

Alopecia Totalis (AT)

Total loss of the hair on the scalp.

Alopecia Universalis (AU)

Total loss of all hair on the body.

What causes Alopecia?

The exact cause of alopecia areata isn’t known, although it’s generally agreed it’s a disease of the immune system. There is believed to be a genetic component in some cases and a possible link with stress.

What difference can you make?

lyt 12 days of Christmas Haircare charity special : day 5

Hi there beautiful people!

I've been behind the scenes for a long while but what better time for me to jump back into blogging than to share some really important information on...
Locks of Love

After watching this promo video, I realised how much hair can mean. As a transitioner, I have a personal debate on whether or not I want to go for the big chop but the bottom line is, I have a choice which is not the case for many of the recipients of Locks of Love.

Locks of love is a non-profit organisation providing wigs for under 21's who are financially disadvantaged and dealing with a variety of long term conditions which have caused the loss of their hair. The main cause of hair loss among this group is alopecia areata for which there has been no cure found. The Mission statement at Locks of Love is to...

"return a sense of self, confidence and normalcy to children suffering from hair loss by utilizing donated ponytails to provide the highest quality hair prosthetics to financially disadvantaged children"

How can we help?

I know the prospect of donating 10" of hair which is the minimum length, may seem daunting however this is not the only way we can get involved to help. Here are some ways that are suggested for us to get involved!

lyt 12 days of Christmas Haircare Charity Special : day 3

- Sonia Evelyn -
Evelyn Products Limited

Watching my family suffer

'At 21 years old, my strong athletic brother was diagnosed with leukaemia. As a teenager I remember praying to God and asking “Why?”. It didn’t make any sense. Now as an adult I am fully aware there was a cluster of young adults and children diagnosed at the time in our area. We lived up the road from a nuclear warhead plant……………..

This was my first experience of suffering with cancer. Since then my mother has died of a lung disease related to passive smoking. Her sister died from stomach cancer. My uncle died from throat cancer. I am not unique. So many others share my story and this is what both frightens me and motivates me.

Currently, my sister suffers with breast cancer. I love her dearly. Again, I found myself asking “Why?”

When Catherine first lost her hair through chemotherapy, I was experiencing extreme shedding through using a relaxer. My hair was falling out in handfuls, daily. I thought, if she could be so serene and look so appealing bald, then what have I got to complain about. So I removed all my hair.

Catherine had stopped using many cosmetics because of the chemicals in them and up until then, I had never considered what I put on my body or even the possibility of chemicals passing through the skin into the bloodstream.

I was a single mum on income support of £57 per week, with a laptop that had the biggest crack in the screen, but my passion to find answers was obsessive. I had started my MSc in Public Health so used access to the British Library to research cosmetics. This is how the FRO her hair range began.

I now know that toxins are all around us. In the water we drink, the air we breathe, the food we eat. I believe we also need to be more aware of what we put on our bodies, as particular chemicals are known to be absorbed via the skin. Some can even be urinated hours later.

Our FRO her hair range is not about following the “natural” trend or trying to be edgy. It is a borne from the philosophy that each and every manufacturer should take greater accountability and greater responsibility to ensure what they produce is safe for humans, wildlife and the planet. Safety should never be outweighed by profit.

I can never have my mother back but I can do my best to ensure what I create never causes anyone, any form of harm, on any level. Every single ingredient we use is researched for safety first, then for performance. As painful as it is, I believe there is learning to be gained in every eventuality in life.

Yesterday, we heard our FRO her range has been shortlisted for the Hair Awards 2012! ………………..…..I know my mother is smiling!'

lyt 12 days of Christmas Haircare Charity Special : day 2 | breast cancer care

As you've guessed today's fantastic charity of the day is ...

'Breast Cancer Care'

Yes it's the wonderful holiday season and we are all in the merriest of moods with Christmas and the New Year only a few days away! Well why not spare a few minutes to indulge in the Christmas charity spirit too!

What is Breast Cancer?
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK. Around 50,000 people are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, around 300 of them men.

Approximately 81 per cent of breast cancers occur in women who are over the age of 50. Nearly half of all cases are diagnosed in people in the 50-69 age group.

Just over 49,000 women and 300 men are diagnosed with breast cancer each year in the UK.

Breat Cancer and Haircare
Just about every cancer patient who undergoes Chemotherapy experiences all if not some hairloss.
Though hairloss may be the least of a breast cancer pateints worries, there is no denying... it does take its toll.

Breast cancer patients often result to wearing wigs or beautiful scarves as hair accesories... do you know someone with breast cancer? Perhaps you could buy them a silk headscarf for Christmas?

What role can you play?
You are not expected to donte your life savings to support the cause but that extra pound sitting at the bottom of your bag could find a better home and make a small difference this Christmas.

Here are some fun ways to get involved

- Make a donation
- Gift Shop (perfect place to find some xmas prezzies)
- Get involved in a Fundraising event

- If none of the above fit... sit back with a hot cup of tea and simply browse

and finally remember... exchange your small tooth combs for wide ones, swap your cotton headscarf for a silk or satin one... and Have a MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

lyt 12 days of Christmas Haircare Charity Special : day 1

October is usually a month when we remember Breast Cancer and go the extra mile to raise funds to support such an amazing charity.

I'm not one to post about anything too personal but a personal experience has made me want to make this Christmas about awareness and the need to understand and appreciate the pains of strong people who are connected to haircare in their very own way.

This time 6 years ago I have memories of the usual Christmas preparations in my house in London. My mum would make several trips from North to South and East to West just to makesure that just about every 100 members of the faimily had their very own Christmas present! Those times I was a teenager, too cool to care and mouthy! O did I have a mouth! I did everything I could to dodge the boring Christmas shopping trips and would groan for days at the thought of doing it, so much so that my mum as sweet as she was would leave me be and carry all of the bags by herself. Who would know 2 years later those memories would never relive themselves and that, that would be the last Christmas she shopped.

My mum's diagnosis was a complete shock. Yes dad was present, but she held everything together, the perfect neck of an equally strong man. With 2 younger sisters my fear was of their lost memories and the pain they must have felt at seeing this beautiful woman change so drastically.

Fast forward 3 years later and the memories of what a beautiful upbringing I had will never fade.

So how does this relate to haircare and this blog? Well it's no surprise that cancer patients lose their hair, which comes as an exceptional shock for someone with long luscious tresses. I can't imagine losing my hair or having it made so short without my consent, and the ignorance of so many people and their hair is so disheartening to me.

This month rather than just host giveaways, I'd love for you to make that conscious effort to appreciate and look after what you have.

Make haircare about love this season and stay tuned for tomorrows charity of the day!!!  x
