My Hair Texture. An Ongoing Love Story

Am I the only one that thought before going natural that my post transitioner chop would result in a head full of curls that would pop when just ever so slightly teased with some H2O? Hmmm!

After parting ways with my long loved relaxer and throughout my transitioning journey, I was convinced that my hair would resemble the texture of many of my much loved 'youtube sisters' . Well that fantasy was exactly that, a fantasy, because those dreamt of curls emerged as coils and kinks, much contrary to my expectations!

My natural hair is a combination of textures, ranging right from what hair typing enthusiasts would deem as 3c, right up to 4cThe front of my hair can barely hold a curl, kink or coil without some help! Its texture is very loose and reminds me of when little children do crayon drawings of ocean waves... Pretty much a cute squiggle!

Now as for my nape and hair in the utmost back area of my head, tight may just be an understatement! My hair pretty much coils up on itself resulting in a sea full of the most annoying single strand knots!

It took me a while to actually embrace the fact that this is my hair, I fought it for so long and once wreaked a whole lot of havoc when trying to force a "curly" wash and go - with close enough to an entire pot of gel!

*Sigh*

Anyway what can I say, the love story goes on! What's love without a little bit of war right?

Do I regret my decision to go natural? Nah, it takes a lot more to rock this boat!

So here I am loves, natural haired, product free and embracing it

  1. Beautiful hair! Its going to be more and more beautiful as it grows and become really big!

Those days when you are frustraited you can do a do a Domenican Blowout. With some practice you can do it your self. So you got both things, straight and curls!

  3. OMD Fiona!!
You're making it work for you, seriously. I remember when you decided to transition over 2 years ago, I also tried to transition for that long but I could only go 8 months before doing the big chop. Now its been 13 month and i've been hiding this baby under a wig since then.
I've had 2 blow outs (1, a failed attempt to do a weave with leave out and 2, the other just to let the hair out, my shrinkage is real + winter & London hard water brrrrr) and my first press on Thursday as i'm long over due for a trim and I can't do it myself (super excited).

This mane is thick!!! You see it. Any hoo just wanted to let you know you're one of the main reasons I went natural as well. It was like I could transition with you although mine was a lot shorter..... An Avid Reader :-)

    1. Aww Minerva this has made me so happy! Smiling as I read! I think when you go natural you somehow think you won't have bad hair days or days that super stress you out just like before you went natural! Ive had to remind myself of relaxed hair days when I almost couldn't leave the house because my hair was beyond cray! Its funny looking back- but the journey is indeed a fulfilling one and despite the odd bad hair day or two , Ii truly am loving it :)

How was your press? So sorry I am late, took a 2 week break from social media! Needed a cleanse!

  4. This is my life....My hair texture is a little bit of everything. I get a little overwhelmed and I get disappointed every now and then. I decided I will never attempt a wash a go, the back of my head is super tightly coiled like yours and the front....very straight almost no curl, twist, coil and the center is a mix of both. I'm not going to give up though, my hair is beautiful and healthy and that's why I started this journey.

  5. Lollllll am actually laughing at Us(you$ I) IKR. I can totally see myself in that. When I was transitioning , I really thought my hair was Gonna be with curls too . But after cutting my hair, and becoming fully natural , am left wit no curl but coils and I tried wash and go once and gave up. So I really do get u gal. And like u said, it didnt stop me from loving my hair either. It's mine so I just had to find things my hair likes doing. No more unnecessary manipulations or curl fantasies or envy.!. You are indeed a good writer. Am new to you blog and I totally enjoyed reading this and will sure be a regular reader here.

  7. Hey Fiona!

I hope you are well! :) Thanks for sharing this blog post. Very well said! I totally can relate to what you are saying! I see hair texture as a growing issue among many naturals, which even inspired me to write a post on ' natural hair-envy'. I honestly believe your hair and you as a person are beautiful :) Have a great day ;)
